Conceived by Gustav Klimt, Max Kurzweil and Ludwig Hevesi, Ver Sacrum was founded in 1898 as the official magazine of the Viennese Secession, which had sprung into being the previous year. The Vienna Secession (German: Wiener Secession also known as the Union of Austrian Artists, or Vereinigung Bildender Knstler sterreichs) is an art movement, closely related to Art Nouveau, that was formed in 1897 by a group of Austrian painters, graphic artists, sculptors and architects, including Josef Hoffman, Koloman Moser, Otto Wagner and Gustav Klimt. During its six years of activity, 471 original drawings were made specifically for the magazine, along with 55 lithographs and copper engravings and 216 block prints, by artists such as Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Koloman Moser, Otto Wagner, Max Fabiani, Joseph Maria Olbrich and Josef Hoffmann. Ver sacrum ('sacred spring') is a religious practice of ancient Italic peoples, especially the Sabelli 1 (or Sabini 2) and their offshoot Samnites, concerning the deduction of colonies.
